Barbara Bernrieder in „Kunst am Isartor“
Opening and wine-tasting in one eveningMunich, 14.04.2011 – The current exhibition opens with paintings by the Munich artist Barbara Bernrieder. In cooperation with Kunst am Isartor (Art at the Isartor), the WTS GROUP again provides facilities for art. The exhibition runs until 27 May 2011. On the evening of the opening, guests also have the opportunity to taste the award-winning Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 2006.
During the opening, Barbara Bernrieder will present a selection of her pictures at the premises of WTS. The Munich artist studied at the Academy of Fine Art, received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation, was sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry for Research, Science and Art to complete a six-month residency in New York, and received the Bavarian sponsorship award. She has just returned from a period as artist in residency in Bangalore, India.
The art critic Gottfried Knapp characterises Barbara Bernrieder's work by defining the depth in the colour continuum that is produced through juxtapositioning and layering: "In some pictures you can literally climb colour steps into the background and then return to the surface." By combining various painting techniques, Barbara Bernrieder has left conventional painting behind: individual strokes of the paintbrush become placements of colour and colour arrangements. The layered configuration of colour conveys a feeling of plastic depth, which can be viewed at close range during the opening and exhibition.
Born in 1970 in Upper Bavaria, the artist's oeuvre is an exceptionally colourful contribution to abstract painting. Different levels of colour are laid on top of one another, sometimes with a glazing effect, sometimes covering. They give rise to layered elements in the picture, in some cases protruding in a plastic way to create depth in the painting. The non-representational painting that is reflected in Bernrieder's works allows surface segments and elements to appear juxtapositioned and on top of one another. They really do induce the viewer to sink deeply into the body of the picture. The artist nevertheless also deals with elements of landscape painting and merges them with abstract forms and areas. Bernrieder displays some of these landscape-inspired works for the exhibition at Kunst am Isartor.
As part of the opening of the exhibition, WTS not only welcomes the artist Barbara Bernrieder, but also on this occasion a wine-grower from a vineyard in the Tuscan town of Montepulciano. Kunst am Isartor guests have the opportunity to taste the excellent red wine produced by Alberto Brini.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from the south of the Italian region of Tuscany is one of the three great Sangiovese wines. The red variety of grapes, one of the most important in Italy, is known as a noble vine. Sangiovese, meaning "blood of Jupiter", has an elegant taste and is nevertheless full-bodied. Montepulciano is well known to wine connoisseurs – the town with almost 15,000 inhabitants has become celebrated chiefly through winegrowing.
